HISTORY

Established in 1965, Panchmura Mahavidyalaya is the first rural degree college and third undergraduate college in Bankura. It was named after the place Panchmura which is renowned for its terracotta crafts not only in the district of Bankura but also in India. The College is the manifestation of long-cherished dream of the locality to bring the light of higher education to the cottages of marginal farmers, land labourers and the poor. Long-sighted vision of the local educationists like Dr. Ratnakar Mandal, Shri M. K. Mukherjee (founder President of the GB), Shri C. B. Sannigrahi and Shri S.Banerjee (1st founder Principal) was transformed into reality under the benevolent leadership of Dr. Pasupati Mandal (the then MP). The generous families of the villages of Joypur and Kulbani donated considerable tracts of land on which the college was founded. Basic initial infrastructure was built with the hard earned collective contributions and untiring efforts of the local people most of whom are peasants. However, the classes of the College were started in the premises of Panchmura High School on 20th August, 1965 for three year General Degree Courses and University Entrance courses in Arts. In 1968, the College was shifted to its own premises in the newly-constructed buildings.
Setting off its enlightened journey with limited resources and infrastructure, the College has been steadily augmenting its infrastructure and resources for offering contemporary undergraduate courses in Arts, Commerce and Science. Because of the suitable courses and programmes delivered by energetic and experienced professors and teachers, adequate infrastructure and facilities, and active and cooperative office staff, the College was accredited with B+ grade by NAAC in 2007 and 2016.

MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT

Panchmura Mahavidyalaya, affiliated to Bankura University, is a premier academic institution of undergraduate studies in the rural tribal region Panchmura of the Bankura district of West Bengal. Along with the academic enhancement, the College, which is situated in one of the most underdeveloped parts of the country, has made a remarkable contribution to rural enlightenment and empowerment. I consider it a great privilege to be associated, in some way or the other, to this great institution, and it is more so now that I have the opportunity to contribute as President of the Governing Body, the administrative authority of the College. The College was established in 1965. I can vouch that the Principal and all the staff of the College is trying their level best in fulfilling its social and educational responsibility, through well-planned curriculum and outreach programmes. It is a matter of great aspiration and dream for the freshers seeking admission to this college, and a matter of pride and honour for the pass-out graduates.

The vision of this college is creating a Humane, just and inclusive society.

Holistic training that goes beyond education is imparted to students through extra-curricular activities, skill enhancement programs and sports activities, cultural activities to develop them into all rounded persons. The institution also takes the effort of conducting placement drives for the passed out learners in the campus of the institution. Also, is actively conducting self-employment motivating programs in the campus.

LOCATION

Far from the maddening crowds’ ignoble strife, there bacons Panchmura Mahavidyalaya, the abode of learning. Surrounded by serene green vegetation of saal and segun and situated 2 km away from Panchmura Bazar on the top of a small ‘tila’ the college provides ideal environment for teaching and learning. The College is well connected with the district town Bankura and temple town Bishnupur through metal roads. All buses plying on the Taldangra-Panchmura-Bankadah State Highway pass through the college’s main gate since morning to evening for the benefit of students, teachers and staff. Though most of the people in the locality are economically poor but they nourish a rich heritage and culture. In addition to terracotta, the place is famous for weaving one of the best quality Baluchori saree and folk dances like Vadu-tusu and Kathi-naach.
